Tips and Tricks for Moving and Storing Artwork
Many of us have prized pieces of art in our possession that we would like to keep safe. Art and valuables are also some of the most commonly stored objects within self-storage units. If it's a painting from local or famous artists, or from the classroom of your favorite kiddo we understand that these can be extremely important and have comprised a list of tips and tricks to make sure your art stays looking like a masterpiece.
- Climate control - Make sure your paintings are kept in a climate-controlled environment. If you do not have space in your home many storage units are climate controlled and can help protect the piece from the elements.
- Wrap - Wrap the pieces in protective material to prevent dust from accumulating or accidental rips and tares. Bubble wrap, paper bags, or even an old blanket will do a great job. Also, consider removing your paintings from the frame. Bulky frames can take up a lot of space and removing them can allow you to store multiple pieces side by side. Also, if you do keep your paintings in their frames place an X in masking tape across the glass, this will keep the majority of the glass in place even it is shattered.
- Box - If you are moving your artwork it's very important that you box it correctly. Choose a box as close to the same dimensions of your painting as possible, taking into consideration the width of the wrapping around the piece. Once you have placed the painting inside close the box and carefully move it around to see if the painting moves inside. If it does fill the empty space in the box with more bubble wrap, newspaper, or tissue. It's also a good idea to write “Fragile” on the outside so everyone is aware when it comes time to move.
